I am a voracious reader and every week I come across either a book, online piece or website I want to share with others. I’ve decided to curate these gems and highlight them on Friday. I hope you find these faves as insightful as I do.
- In an online writing class I took last month, I leaned about The Rolling Stones interview with Stephen King. If you are a writer or an artistic type or someone who wants to gain mastery in your field, you must read this.
- “Saying “no” has more creative power than ideas, insights and talent combined.” – Kevin Ashton, Are you putting your creative work first? “Creative People Say No” is an insightful look at the power of no and harnessing creativity.
- It is February and by now, those of you who made resolutions are now in the murky water of maybe I’ll try again in 2017. Mark Manson provides a interesting perspective in “Your Goals Are Overrated.” He makes a poignant distinction between habits and goals. Find out what 6 habits he thinks are non-negotiable.
- What does romance mean to you? The Cut offers an essay which might change your definition of the r-word. “What Romance Means After 10 Years of Marriage” by Heather Havrilesky is an important essay for all of us.
What were your favorite reads this week?
I read a post by Christine Carter on Scary Mommy that I really loved. It’s been a week of catching up and knowing I missed a lot of posts too. It was my trip!
I’m always interested in what Stephen King has to say.
Tamara,
I think you will like the interview. He’s always full of insight.
I will check out the article you recommended – thanks! Have a good weekend!
Another compelling list of pieces to read this weekend, Rudri – thanks! I’m just *now* getting around to reading that Stephen King piece, and just today I posted on my intentions for the year, so the Mark Manson piece is very timely for me.
Have a great weekend!
I find Mark Manson’s advice sound, helpful and practical. Hope the piece resonates with you as much as it did with me. Happy weekend!
I hadn’t heard about the Stephen King essay in Rolling Stone. Thanks for sharing, Rudri. I found his On Writing book filled with good information. I’ve read it a few times over the years. I’m going to check the new essay now.
Jackie,
On Writing is great – I keep this book and Bird by Bird (Lamott) accessible at all times in my office. His interview is from 2014, but was new to me – so I thought other readers might appreciate it too. Have a good weekend!
Loved the Stephen King interview. “I think uncertainty is good for you. Certainty breeds complacency.” I have On Writing, Bird by Bird and Still Writing (Dani Shapiro) as staples too. And I added Why We Write About Ourselves (that you mentioned last Friday) on my book list.
Your Friday Faves are becoming one of my Faves to peruse. Happy Weekend, Rudri.
Glad you enjoy my Friday Faves, Barbara! Thanks for letting me know.
Such great links. I don’t think I’ve seen that King interview. Heading over.
I just had a great chance to hear/see Annie Barrows at the SF Writers Conference. Besides signing a book for my granddaughter:-), she shared insights that brought me comfort and reduced my own self-initiated pressure…
I just bought her latest book, The Truth According to Us. An historical novel of intense story that takes place in West VA during the Great Depression.
Thanks for sharing, Rudri! I will check into all three of your “faves”! Trish
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about meeting Annie Barrows. I look forward to hearing more and will definitely check out her book.
Thank you for sharing. xo
