“The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn and feel and change and grow and love and live.”——Leo F. Buscaglia
You Have To Be Willing To Risk

I think I remember Leo Buscaglia from the 1970’s. He was a “hugger” philosopher/doctor. I seem to remember him saying how a person needed to be hugged “x” number of times every day; and that hugging was important to a person’s happiness.
I love this quote and I think Dr. Buscaglia is right. I don’t know the context of his quote, but assuming he is talking about relationships, they always require some sort of emotional risk. Sometimes that results in suffering and sorrow. We can learn to grow from that. Or we learn to withdraw and lose trust in other people. I definitely fell into the latter category, and stopped taking risks. Now, I am working on becoming a risk taker. It is a growing process; but the reward is to: “grow and love and live”.
Quote Thursday’s 🙂
Robin,
Thanks for sharing your experience. Risks are difficult, whether they revolve around the personal or professional sphere. Learning to take the plunge and embrace risk is a way to yes to vulnerability. I applaud your efforts. It certainly takes courage.
I have risked a lot at different times of my life and it didn’t always work out but I would not take any of it back because it made me who I am and I’ve had an amazing life.
Better to risk then to wonder what if. I am glad you took these chances. They certainly shape us in ways that we wouldn’t realize otherwise.
Great quote! Very true even if it’s sometimes difficult to live by!
